SkillBridge providers in fire and EMS

Fire departments, fire academies, EMT and paramedic programs, and EMS agencies that hold an approved DoW SkillBridge listing. The official database exists, but it is hard to search by career field, so this is the fire and EMS slice of it in one place, with a link to each provider.

Last checked 2026-09-03 against the DoW SkillBridge opportunity database. Pulled from the DoW SkillBridge opportunity database on the date above using the keywords firefighter, fire department, fire rescue, fire district, fire academy, fire protection, wildland, paramedic, EMT, emergency medical, ambulance. Fire-sprinkler and fire-alarm contractors, air-medical pilot and mechanic roles, engineering firms, confined-space contractors and dispatch-only roles were removed. Website links come from the provider's own domain as listed in the database; federal fire departments on bases have no public site and link to the database instead.

Read this before you call anyone. SkillBridge lets you train with a civilian organization during your last 180 days on active duty while still drawing full pay and benefits. It is not an entitlement: your commander approves it, not the provider, and agreements lapse and get renewed all the time. Confirm the listing in the database, then bring it to your transition office. Tailboard Academy is not a SkillBridge provider and is not affiliated with any organization below, the Department of War, or the VA.

If you are separating out of Pendleton, Miramar, Twentynine Palms or Barstow, start here.

Fire departments and fire districts

Municipal, county and federal fire departments with an approved listing.

Fire academies

College-based academies with an approved listing. Most run to NFPA 1001 or the state Firefighter I/II standard.

EMT and paramedic programs

Schools with an approved listing for EMT, Advanced EMT or paramedic training.

EMS agencies that train and hire

Ambulance services and hospital EMS systems that take SkillBridge members as EMTs or paramedics.

Using the 180 days

A SkillBridge placement at a fire department or EMS agency is six months of civilian experience banked before you file a single application. The candidates who get the most out of it run the rest of the pipeline in parallel: the written exam, the CPAT clock, and above all the oral board, so they walk off active duty with the application ready instead of starting it then. The military to fire service page covers what the GI Bill, VR&E and veterans' preference actually do, and the Military → Fire guide walks the whole timeline.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tailboard Academy a SkillBridge provider?

No. Tailboard Academy is an independent study platform with no SkillBridge agreement and no relationship with any organization on this page. The list exists because the official database is hard to search by career field. Use it to find a provider, then confirm the listing in the DoW SkillBridge database and talk to your transition office.

Who approves a SkillBridge placement?

Your commander. SkillBridge is not an entitlement; the provider can accept you and your command can still say no. You must be within 180 days of separation, and most commands want the request well before that. Start the conversation the moment you are inside 12 months.

Does 'Under review' mean the program is closed?

No. It is the database's own label for a provider whose program length is pending re-approval. The organization is still listed. Contact them and ask.

How current is this list?

It is pulled from the DoW SkillBridge database and re-checked each quarter; the date at the top is the last check. Agreements expire and new ones are approved between checks, so treat a listing as a place to start, not a guarantee the slot is open.
