Firefighter Written Exam Check

The written exam is the first scored gate in most fire hiring processes, and the one candidates under-prepare for most consistently because "general aptitude" sounds like something you can't study. You can. Entry-level writtens test a stable set of skills (reading carefully, computing quickly without a calculator, reasoning about levers and gears, orienting from a map, choosing sensibly in human situations) and every one of them moves with practice.

This free check is 20 original questions, four per section, scored by section the moment you finish, with the reasoning behind every question you missed. Nothing to sign up for.

Start the 20-question check

About 20 minutes. Four questions in each of the five sections. No calculator; most departments don't allow one, and pencil speed is part of what's being measured.

Take it cold and timed. Studying first inflates the baseline and hides exactly the section you're looking for.

What this actually measures

Five sections, because "can I pass the written?" isn't one question. Formats differ by vendor (FCTC's statewide written in California, National Testing Network's FireTEAM, in-house exams elsewhere) but the skill list barely does:

Memory and observation sections (study an image, then recall it) exist on many exams too. They need a timed-image format this quick check can't do honestly, so they live in the full practice tests instead.

Frequently asked

Is this the real firefighter written exam?
No. It's original practice material built to mirror the sections entry-level writtens test. It is not actual exam content, and Tailboard Academy isn't affiliated with National Testing Network, FCTC, CPS HR, or any department or test vendor.

Do I need an account to get my score?
No. Your score, per-section breakdown, and the explanation for every miss appear immediately, no email, no card. An account is only for the full-length tests and tracking improvement over time.

How long does it take?
Twenty questions, about 20 minutes. Do it without a calculator.

What score do I need?
Passing thresholds commonly sit near 70%, but most departments rank by score rather than just passing you. A 90 can mean hundreds of positions on a big list that a 71 doesn't. We report each section as Strong / Developing / Gap rather than predicting a pass, because four questions can't support a number that precise. This is an estimate of preparation, not a prediction of any department's outcome.

Which section should I study first?
Whichever scores lowest here. Mechanical and spatial move fastest with practice because most people have never seen the formats; reading usually costs points on answering from common sense instead of the passage.
