Basic requirements

• At least 18 years old at appointment to Firefighter I
• A valid Class A, B, or C California driver's license
• Ability to follow oral and written directions, do heavy physical work, exercise good judgment in hazardous emergencies, and be willing to live in remote areas and work weekends and holidays

How CAL FIRE hiring works

CAL FIRE FF1 is largely seasonal/temporary — contracts typically run the length of fire season (up to nine months) but are eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits. Applicants are sorted into categories:
