How to Get Hired at Las Vegas Fire & Rescue: The Firefighter Trainee Process

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue (LVFR) protects the City of Las Vegas — separate from Clark County Fire, which covers the Strip — from roughly 20 stations. Entry is through a Firefighter Trainee recruitment (with a separate Firefighter/Paramedic Trainee track). Here is the path and how to prepare. Confirm the latest on the official site, lasvegasnevada.gov.

Basic requirements

The selection process

  1. Apply during an open Firefighter Trainee posting on the City of Las Vegas job portal — LVFR publishes a step-by-step recruitment-process document each cycle.
  2. Written examination.
  3. CPAT verification — the card must fall inside the window printed on the recruitment.
  4. Interviews and selection; paramedic-track candidates apply to the separate Firefighter/Paramedic Trainee posting.
  5. Conditional offer with EMT verification, background, medical, and psychological evaluation, then the LVFR academy.

Frequently asked questions

Is Las Vegas Fire and Rescue the same as Clark County Fire?

No. LVFR serves the City of Las Vegas proper, while the Clark County Fire Department covers the Strip and unincorporated county. They run separate recruitments with different requirements — many candidates test for both.

When does LVFR require EMT certification?

Possession of a current Nevada state or National Registry (NREMT) EMT certificate is required by the date of conditional job offer, and must be maintained afterward. It is not required at application.

Does Las Vegas Fire and Rescue require the CPAT?

Yes — recent recruitments required successful CPAT completion with a licensed agency within a specific dated window before the posting deadline. Check the current minimum-requirements document for exact dates.
