I am a working firefighter and paramedic in Southern California, and a helicopter rescue medic. Before the fire service I was a U.S. Navy search and rescue medical technician. I went through the civilian hiring process the same way the people reading this site are going through it now: the written, the CPAT, the oral board, the background, the academy, and a lot of waiting in between.
Why Tailboard Academy exists
Most candidates who wash out are not short on fitness or on knowledge. They lose on the oral board, and they lose it because they rehearsed in their heads instead of out loud. Tailboard started as a way to fix that one thing: a panel you can sit in front of as many times as you want, that asks the follow-ups a real panel asks, and tells you afterward what actually happened in the room. The practice exams, the CPAT plans, and the department guides grew around it because the same people kept asking the same questions.
How the guides are written
Every guide on this site is written by me and carries my name. The department hiring pages are checked against the department's own posting, and the date at the top of each page is the last time I touched it. When something on a page is my opinion, it reads like an opinion. When it is a rule, I link the source. The guides do not use scraped question banks, do not promise a score or a job, and do not pretend any department, the NREMT, or any branch of the military has anything to do with this site. It is independent, and it says so at the bottom of every page.
What I will and will not tell you
I will tell you what the process looks like from the inside, what candidates get wrong, and how to practice so the room does not surprise you. I will not name my department, discuss its internal policy, or tell you whether something in your background disqualifies you. Those questions belong to the department you are applying to, and a straight answer from me would be a guess.
